Enrolled ordinances, enrolled resolutions, engrossed ordinances of the Constitutional Convention of 1901, 1901.

The Constitution of 1901 was drafted in convention from May to Sept. of 1901 by 155 delegates elected from across Ala. Although amended numerous times, this constitution is still the primary, legal document of the state of Ala. The convention adopted the enrolled ordinances, enrolled resolutions, and engrossed ordinances in the process of creating a new constitution. The handwritten enrolled ordinances are rules or regulations set forth by the convention amending sections of the Constitution of 1875 or proposing new sections. These ordinances discuss topics such as the construction of a courthouse and jail for Shelby County, the line of succession in the event of the governor's death, and the compensation of delegates attending the convention. The enrolled resolutions were adopted to facilitate convention activities such as the payment of a stenographer to take the minutes of the convention and to express the opinion of the convention such as concern for the health of Governor William Samford. The enrolled resolutions and enrolled ordinances were both adopted by convention vote and include the vote totals for and against the ordinance or resolution as well as the signatures of the chairman and secretary of the convention and the name of the individual or committee that introduced the ordinance or resolution. The series also consists of handwritten engrossed ordinances. These ordinances were used to create one of the first drafts of the new constitution. The engrossed ordinances contain notes about the text and some editorial markings.
